Flora and Fauna

Rudimentary testing has begun on the flora and fauna for various uses to supplement our stock. Initially, I am looking for botanical Medicine which can work on humans. So far I have found a plant which acts as an anesthetic, anti coagulant and paralytic. I shall endeavor to locate other use from the plants in our proximity. I have a particular interest in burn relief like Aloe. In addition, I would like to find remedies to any planetary ailments we may come into contact with should we become contaminated. With our Botanist down, I am largely on my own for this job.

Research on the chitinous ambush predator continues. Its saliva contains an enzyme which inhibits healing. I believe an anticoagulant could be derived from it.

Didn't see that one coming
  • October 24th 2033 – Planet fall on Wolf 1061c, after 4 hours of surveying the planet for a likely position of a Crew Habitat, heretofore after referred to as the HAB, the crew’s botanist, Victorina Cantos, was critically injured by a large, burrowing, insectile-like creature. Marine Jinx took out the creature with a well aimed shot from her bow. Crew returned to the Magellan with makeshift quarantine protocols.
  • October 25th 2033 – Engineering team start to repurpose geological scanner to use in ground sensing radar. Dr. Matsushima starts studying samples collected from creature. Creature has an enzyme that halts the healing process while in a host’s system (no daily healing until enzyme is removed)
  • October 31st 2033 – Ground Sensing Radar (GSR) completed, range, 200m (Adds +4 to Awareness/notice checks to detect incoming subterranean creatures, also goes “ping”)
  • November 1st 2033 – Crew return to ground, landing by completed HAB main module, completed autonomously by Habitat 3D Printing Rover.
  • November 5th 2033 – Engineer Darell Wescott dies of mysterious causes in an electrical short while performing routine maintenance on the Engine.
  • November 7th 2033 – HAB fully functional and all secondary nodes created. Work starts on Automated Factory to build mining bots/refinery.
  • November 10th 2033 – Engineer Veronika Barrick caught trying to sabotage life support aboard the Magellan, Capt. Zemke exiles her planetside, having her dropped off 4 miles from the HAB. Jensin Crews saves her from two ground based apex predators with remotely operated drone. Barrick collapses from injuries a mile from the HAB, decision is made to bring her in to assist with Dr. Matsushima’s experimentation of medicinal properties of the planet’s plant life.
  • November 11th 2033 – Habitat 3D Printer halts Automated Factory work to add a holding cell for Veronika Barrick. Printer to resume Factory work the next day.
  • November 12th 2033 – Site located for Painite and Palldium mining.
  • November 16th 2033 – Automated Factory complete. Assembly work on remote mining units starts using an initial supply of materials brought in on the Megalodon, additional materials to be gathered on site for additional support.
The Launch of the EUS Magellan
What else can go wrong?
  • June 8th, 2028 – Delay of Interstellar launch of EUS Magellan, source of delay determined by engineering and Drone Operator Crews to be a faulty coupling that regulates power to the slipstream engines.
  • October 12th, 2033 – Crew awakens, discover after several water supply had been contaminated by hydraulic fluid. Fire started in hose junction box by engineering team trying to access and correct issue. Section closed off and fire contained.
  • October 13th, 2033 – Crew on 3 day water suspension, given saline intravenously while team rebuilds junction box. Source of contamination unknown, original box too badly damaged.
  • October 16th, 2033 – Crew off saline, morale a little low.
  • October 18th, 2033 – EUS Magellan enters orbit of Wolf 1062d, takes readings. High source of frozen water.
  • October 20th, 2033 – Leave 1061d orbit, engage primary engines, course set for Wolf 1061c
  • October 25th, 2033 – Enter orbit of Wolf 1061c, begin scanning planet with the following findings:

Light-side: 137° C
Temperate Band Median: 42°C
Dark-side: -72°C
Day/Night Cycle: None
Solar Rotation: 17.9 Days (Earth Standard)
Gravity: 1.6
Climate in habitable Zone: Ranges from Desert to Arctic, but the vast majority is tropical with frequent, powerful storms. There is a variety of short, squat flora, but fauna is not immediately evident.

Flora: The plants are mostly short and wide, though “Trees” do exist, but they have to mature enough to have a wide and strong enough trunk to grow tall. The leaves look black in the pale, almost pink hued sky.
